The advancement of student participation in SAAPS, building on the allocation of seed money and other initiatives.

Activities
In the current two-year term of Council, there will be a number of grants to assist students to participate in the 2005 Research Colloquium and 2006 Congress. The implementation will be by means of applications for R2,000 grants in May 2005 for the September 2005 colloquium and in early 2006 for the June 2006 congress. Modest funds will also be allocated for awards of full SAAPS memberships annually to a number of promising students.
EMERGING SCHOLARSHIP
Objective
Providing an organisational and support base for young and emerging scholars in the Political Studies community of South Africa, with a special emphasis on race and gender.

Activity
Compilation of a database of emerging Political Science scholars in South Africa, a Peer group programme and a Mentorship programme, Culmination of activities in the annual congress or colloquium, where there will be significant attention to presentation of research-in-progress by emerging scholars.
BEST STUDENT AWARD
Objective
SAAPS continues this annual activity to encourage student engagement in Political Studies in South Africa. The award comprises an annual competition to find the best undergraduate and Honours students in South Africa

Activity
Annual requests to Departments of Political Science and International Relations to enter their best students of the preceding year in the two categories of undergraduate and Honours. Departments submit substantiating documentation in the form of student assignments. Judges are appointed from the ranks of senior Political Scientists. The awards are usually announced at the annual research colloquium or congress. Requests for nominations of best 2004 students will go out in April 2005.
